Another Cyanobacteria Bloom Seen In Lake Cochituate: DCR

On the day state officials cleared one part of Lake Cochituate, a warning was issued for another portion of the lake.

WAYLAND, MA — A portion of Lake Cochituate was the off-limits due to cyanobacteria was reopened Thursday, but state officials also issued a cyanobacteria warning for another section of the lake.

The cyanobacteria bloom was first seen in the Middle Pond portion of the lake in Natick at the end of May. The state Department of Conservation and Recreation cleared that section for use on Thursday.

Now, the South Pond portion of Lake Cochituate has a potentially dangerous cyanobacteria bloom.

"During a bloom, it is strongly advised that the public should not have contact with the water. Additionally, pet owners should keep their animals away from the shoreline to prevent them from ingesting the water," DCR said in an advisory Thursday.

Although not all cyanobacteria blooms contain toxins, some do. Those toxins can cause a range of symptoms from skin irritation to gastrointestinal distress and neurological damage.
