Death of Gary M. Lewis

A life well lived

Gary M.Lewis was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1945 to Lois and Ben Lewis. He died on May 18th , 2023, after a short stay in the hospital with an unexpected illness.
Gary was a quiet and gentle human who cared deeply for others and worked hard his entire life to
create a world better than he found it. He leaves behind a legacy of people that loved him and will miss him deeply. He was a devoted father to Tucker (Melissa), a loving brother to Robert (Marge) and Melia Lewis, a kind grandfather (G-Pops) to Grayson and Gus, a caring ex-husband to Dottie Lewis (Larry), a dear uncle to 7 nieces and nephews and their respective spouses, a doting puppy
pop to Jasper, a warm and thoughtful stepdad to Kim (Phil) and Joe and a best
friend and husband to Leslie Lewis. He was a friend to all.

Gary led with kindness and humility. He never desired accolades for his endless list of
accomplishments. Rather, he was a man motivated by an insatiable curiosity and
deep desire to consider and improve the world around him. During his lifetime he
was a poet, a chemist, a teacher, a physicist, an author, a camera repairman, a
Peace Corp volunteer, a database architect, a systems organizer, a soccer
coach, a tennis player, a hiker, and a lover of nature, peacefulness and mindfulness.
He passed on a love of baseball through two generations. Gary felt no need to
mention to friends and family his many impressive accomplishments ... He earned
a BA in Chemistry at Ohio Wesleyan University, a MS of Physical Chemistry at
the University of Colorado, and an EdD in Educational Planning from Harvard. He
was an IT and institutional research consultant at 5 colleges and universities.
Gary was an authority and author of 3 books on SQL programming and published
poetry on physics and quantum science. He worked tirelessly throughout his
adult life trying reimagine higher education, with a lens on systemic equities.
At the time of his passing, he was working daily on a collection of poems with
a working title, Quantum Metaphors. His last book of poetry was entitled
Heartbeats of Quantum Silence.

Gary is remembered by all for his gentle kindness and deep intellect. He was endlessly generous
to his family, friends, and to the many organizations that cared for the underprivileged, righteous or ill.
He leaves a deep and lasting fingerprint on the world around him, but lived a man who treaded
lightly with his footprint. He will be sorely missed.
These are some of the organizations that he supported. We would be honored by your support of any of these charities in his name.
