ICYMI: Wayland Students Teach Kids to Swim
High school students are dedicating their time to teach inner city kids how to swim in a program called Water Warriors.

WAYLAND, MA - The program started in 2011 and has been growing ever since.
The Water Warriors program allows Wayland High School students to volunteer their time and skills to give swimming lessons to METCO students from Boston.

Inner city kids are bused to the program, which as of last year had 56 high school volunteers to teach 80 swimmers, providing easy one-on-one opportunities for introductory lessons.
The free program takes place over a span of 12 weeks from March to June. During the lessons, swimmers work to improve their skills in the water and learn essential water safety skills.

According to a study of six urban areas nationwide, nearly 70 percent of African-American children and nearly 60 percent of Latino/Hispanic children have low or no swimming skills, reads the program’s website.
Drowning is also the second leading cause of unintentional death for children under the age of 14.
