No Hazardous Waste Day In Wayland, Town Offering Interim Option

An annual day to get rid of noxious items won't happen in 2023. Here's what Wayland is doing instead.

WAYLAND, MA — A noxious annual tradition won't happen in Wayland in 2023, but the town is providing an alternative if you're willing to take a little drive.

The annual household hazardous waste collection event, which typically happens in April, has been called off because Wayland hasn't been able to secure a vendor to collect the waste. Wayland typically uses the company Clean Harbors.

"Despite a lot of outreach to Clean Harbors and research into other vendors, we have not been able to secure a date for this event in over a year," the Wayland Health Department said in a bulletin this week. "According to the state, many municipalities are having the same problems with obtaining a vendor to host a [hazardous waste] event."

A Clean Harbors storage facility in Braintree burned in February, but it's unclear if that fire is related to Wayland's lack of a vendor. There has been a "shift to regional household hazardous waste collection depot models."

As an alternative, Wayland will pay for residents to drop off hazardous waste at two facilities outside of town. Wayland will cover the first $50 of the cost of waste disposal at two New England Disposal Technologies sites: 83 Gilmore Drive in Sutton and 190 East Main St. in Westfield.

Residents will be able to make drop-offs between April 1 and June 30. Here's a list of what NEDT accepts at the two drop-off facilities.
