WAYLAND, MA — Wayland police are investigating after racist graffiti was found at Wayland High School early Wednesday morning possibly targeting the district's superintendent.

Police responded to the school around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after a school employee found the racist message scrawled on a wall near the Wayland Community Pool.

In a news release, officials did not describe the graffiti, but an email sent to parents Wednesday described the message as the word “Omar” with the N-word painted next to it in white. Wayland Superintendent Omar Easy is black.

"These words were viewable from Old Connecticut Path by students, staff and families arriving at the high school, and students, families, and staff at other schools have become aware of what was written," the email to parents said.

Town officials, including acting Town Manager John Bugbee, Chief Ed Burman and School Committee Chair Chris Ryan denounced the incident in a news release.

"On behalf of Wayland Public Schools and our entire community, I denounce this clear and blatant act of racism. This incident goes against the core values of our community, and it undermines our continuing work in building an inclusive environment for each and every person in the community," Ryan said in a news release.

Burman said he would seek to hold the "person or people found responsible for this hateful message" accountable. The police department is collecting tips about the incident, which you can report by calling (508) 358-4721.
