WAYLAND, MA — An ongoing project to repair a structurally deficient bridge connecting Wayland and Sudbury along Route 27 will start up again this month.

The town shut down the Route 27 bridge crossing the Sudbury River in August 2020 for emergency repairs. That closure allowed construction crews to resurface the 75-year-old bridge deck.

The next phase of the project will begin in mid-March. Construction crews will work on replacing the timber pilings that support the bridge over the water. Those pilings are "failing," according to the town.

The new phase of the bridge rebuild will last until September. The bridge, located just west of the Wayland Country Club, will remain open during construction. Construction crews may have to close lanes on as many as 10 days during the project.

During the 2020 closure, traffic detoured around the Route 27 bridge via Union Avenue and Concord Road in Sudbury and Route 20/Boston Post Road.
