Toxic Algae Found In Lake Cochituate In Wayland

Beaches in Wayland and Framingham will be tested following the toxic algae discovery.

WAYLAND, MA — The state Department of Conservation and Recreation has detected potentially harmful toxic algae in Lake Cochituate's North Pond, according to Wayland health officials.

So far the cyanobacteria — also called blue-green algae — has only been confirmed visually, but Wayland plans to test water on Monday samples at the town beach, Saxonville Beach in Framingham and at a culvert under Route 30 that connects to other parts of Lake Cochituate below the Mass Pike.

People and pets are being warned not to come into contact with the water. Toxic algae can cause a range of ailments, from skin irritation to death in more serious cases.
