WAYLAND, MA — One of Wayland's first responders just completed an important state training.
Ryan Murphy, a firefighter and paramedic, finished his training and graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Career Recruit Program. He is originally from Southborough.
The 10-week program teaches students basic firefighter skills. Graduates need to show proficiency in line safety, search and rescue, ladder operations and other skills.

Before joining the Wayland crew, Murphy was an EMT in Brewster and had his own barber business, where he cut the hair of New England Patriots staff and players.
“Firefighter/Paramedic Murphy goes above and beyond for his community. His commitment and passion for service make him an excellent addition to our department,” said Chief Neil McPherson. “The department would like to congratulate him on completing the academy, and we look forward to watching Murphy continue to grow here in Wayland.”
