The state Department of Public Health on Monday reported 8,625 new COVID-19 cases and one new virus-related death over the weekend. The statewide positive test rate is now at about 6.7 percent, up sharply from the 2 percent rate measured in mid-March.

Health officials believe the BA.2 omicron variant is causing the uptick in cases. The variant may spread more easily than even the original omicron variant, the most contagious form of the virus yet.
