Wayland Police Warn Home Improvement Scams Likely To Increase
Wayland Police warned its residents home improvement scams are likely to increase as the warmer months approach.
WAYLAND, MA - The Wayland Police Department (WPD) issued a news release warning residents that solicitation scams are likely to increase as the warmer months approach.
"These scams typically target the elderly and disabled," the release said. "Suspects often damage portions of a victim's home or exaggerate the need for repairs during an initial inspection." Massachusetts residents have paid tens of thousands of dollars for masonry, driveway work, paving, roofing and other home improvements only to be left with damaged property and little to no improvement.
The WPD said many of these soliciting individuals travel to the U.S. under a program that doesn't allow them to work during their 90-day visit. Residents should be wary of door-to-door solicitation, discounts offered because of "leftover materials," checks made out to individuals, not companies, and individuals showing threatening or intimidating behavior.

"Any unknown person approaching you to do any work on your home should be viewed as a potential scammer," the WPD said. "It is best practice to obtain a minimum of two estimates for home repairs from reputable companies who will carry the appropriate insurance, licenses, apply for the appropriate permits and provide references and coverage to you for their work after completion."
