Wayland-Weston Crew Ends Season At State, National Championships

The season culminated at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Florida last week.

WAYLAND, MA — The Wayland-Weston Crew team ended the season sending multiple athletes to state and national championships, according to the team.

The crew team competed in the Massachusetts Public Rowing Association State Championship at the end of May, winning the team trophy at the event. The team followed that win in Florida at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships held June 8 to 11.

Twenty-three Wayland and Weston athletes — including 16 from Wayland High School — went to the national championship and placed in multiple races. The results for Wayland athletes included:

  • Two Girls Straight 4 boats placed 5th and 11th (Ava Balukonis, Riley Reynolds, Sadie Batista, Lulu Kazlas, Megan O’Donnell, Riley Kendall)
  • Girls Pair placed 16th (Maddie Genis, Sophie Xie)
  • Boys Coxed 4 placed 20th (Alex Dremov, Tanas Kazlas, Miles Reynolds, Sophie Roman)
  • Boys Pair and Boys Single placed 17th (Weston athletes)
  • Boys Straight 4 placed 25th (Evan Brown, Felix Kissell, Liam Munford, Graham Schwendt)

Founded in 2000, Wayland-Weston Crew is a dual-town varsity sport for girls and boys in grades 9 to 12 at Wayland and Weston high schools. The team races in fall long-distance seasons and spring sprint seasons. The team has won medals at state, regional and national regattas. No rowing experience is required to join. Scholarships are available so that every student can row regardless of family financial circumstances. The organization also offers rowing for middle school students.
