📰 News we're reading

1. Months Late, Wellfleet Considers Rental Inspections (provincetownindependent.org) — Wellfleet officials are weighing new short-term rental registration fees and mandatory annual inspections that could start as soon as March 15, with certificates required for 2026. The proposal would charge higher fees for larger homes, fund inspection staffing and software, and impose fines for noncompliance, while residents and board members debate how much revenue should be raised and how it can legally be used.

2. 2 large thresher sharks stranded on Cape Cod - Boston News, Weather, Sports (whdh.com) — A large thresher shark stranded and died on a Wellfleet beach this week, with another washing up in Eastham days earlier. State shark scientists say cold December waters and Cape Cod Bay’s shape can trap migrating sharks along local shorelines, and they warn residents more strandings are likely in coming weeks.

3. New Plan to Alter Saltonstall-Designed House Gets OK (provincetownindependent.org) — A historically significant mid-century modern house in Wellfleet’s Mayo Hill area is moving forward with a scaled-back expansion after the historical commission lifted an 18‑month demolition delay. Owners revised their plans to keep the home single-story, preserve key Saltonstall-era design details, and now head to the zoning board for a special permit to alter the nonconforming property.

4. Rescuers save stranded dolphins in Wareham (boston.com) — Wellfleet gets a brief but notable mention as part of a busy year for dolphin strandings, including a September rescue of 11 animals there. This week, the same marine mammal team helped save two stranded common dolphins in a Wareham marsh and is now evaluating when they can be safely released. The story underscores how frequently Cape waters, including Wellfleet’s, see these emergencies.

5. Pamet Harbor May Get Only Some of the Dredging It Needs (provincetownindependent.org) — Truro officials are scrambling to fund only three-quarters of the dredging Pamet Harbor needs, which could worsen shoaling and navigation issues nearby. In explaining the project, the harbormaster contrasts Truro’s clean sand with sludge in Wellfleet Harbor, underscoring regional concerns about harbor maintenance and safe boating access on this part of the Cape.
