WESTBOROUGH, MA — An on-demand transit service in Westborough and Shrewsbury that's approaching its third year in operation will continue through at least mid-2024 following a vote of the Worcester Regional Transit Authority.

The WRTA board Thursday approved the fiscal 2024 budget — which spans July 1 to June 30, 2024 — and it included $500,000 in funding for the Via service.

WRTA first rolled out Via in Westborough in September 2020. The service allows residents to request curb-to-curb rides through a smartphone app.

The service is similar to private rideshare apps, but is much less expensive. A Via ride to or from the Westborough MBTA commuter rail station is $1, and all other rides cost $2. The system is meant to make up for gaps in the wider bus system, especially for riders who can't use para-transit shuttles.

Both Shrewsbury and Westborough are among the 37 cities and towns near Worcester that are part of the WRTA system, but only Shrewsbury has fixed-route bus service.
