The rare golden eagle that has been recuperating at Tufts Wildlife Clinic will take to the skies again tomorrow.

Clinicians at , together with officials from the State of Connecticut’s Department of Environmental Protection, Sharon Audobon Center and West Virginia University, will release a rare golden eagle tomorrow from Mohawk State Forest in Goshen, Connecticut.

The bird, which can be half again as large as a bald eagle, is a rare visitor to this region. They are commonly found only in the western states, Alaska and Canada. Sightings in New York and New England are exceedingly rare and occur only during migrations.

The golden eagle was found in Amenia, New York, near the New York and Connecticut border, by snowmobilers in the woods in early February.  The bird had sustained multiple puncture wounds on its left leg, which are believed to have been caused by an animal it was trying to capture.

The bird has been cared for by veterinary staff at the Tufts campus.
