Westborough Fundraiser For Homeless Nets $20K Over Weekend
A group of locals, including high school students, spent 24 hours living and sleeping outdoors at a Westborough shopping plaza.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — A Westborough fundraiser for local homeless residents raised about $20,000 while simultaneously demonstrating how hard it is to live outdoors — the reality for an increasing number of people in Worcester County.
"A Night In The Cold" organizer John Bogaert said the event raised over $11,000 on Saturday alone as volunteers stood out at the Colonial Plaza along East Main Street. This is the third year Bogaert has held the fundraiser, and this year was the first time Westborough high schoolers participated.
Over the three years, "A Night In The Cold" has raised close to $70,000 for Mass Coalition For the Homeless and Abby's House, which will receive proceeds from the 2023 event.

Although organized well in advance of the weekend, the participants got a harsh lesson in living outdoors. Snow fell for hours on Saturday, and temperatures dropped into the teens overnight.
"The night had no wind but got down to 16 and felt like it. Sleeping was difficult. The morning was chilly on Sunday, and we stood out there for a couple of hours before breaking everything down. People were so generous and constantly asked if we needed anything," Bogaert said.

High school seniors Brady Henderson and Gray Sassetti slept outdoors for the event. High school Westborough Helps the Homeless club members Delaney Vallee and Sam Nelson came out along with Maggie Hanlon during the daytime hours, standing out in the cold to collect donations and raise awareness for the event.
"Despite a fire, sleeping bags, etc., it was still a difficult day and even harder at night," Sassetti said.
"There is just never a break from some kind of discomfort," Henderson said.
Bogaert is continuing to raise money for Abby's House for another week. Find details on how to donate here.
