American Idol Semifinalist, Weston Native Sonika Vaid Sings Toward Top 10

Vaid earned her spot in the Final 14, and Wednesday looks to make it to the Final 10.

WESTON, MA β€” American Idol contestant β€” and Weston native β€” Sonika Vaid earned a spot in the β€œFinal 14” last week in the reality singing competition.

Pared down from thousands of auditions, then 100s of those who made it to Hollywood, Vaid and 13 others could already consider themselves winners.

But she’s not ready to stop. This week on American Idol, judges whittle the 14 down to 10 finalists in what is being dubbed the β€œWild Card” show.

Last week, after proving themselves alongside Idol legends in a duets segment (see video below), some of the semifinalists will reach the end of their journey. The judges announce the first eight semifinalists to make the coveted Top 10. That will leave six to sing for America’s vote and the final two spots.

On Thursday, Idol airs its first live show of the season, when the final two semifinalists are announced, and the Top 10 perform for America’s vote.

American Idol airs at 8 p.m. (ET) on FOX both nights.

At just 20 years old, Vaid has been declared an early favorite to win Idol, which is in its final season.

Vaid, who grew up in Weston and lives on Martha’s Vineyard, has drawn accolades from judges.

β€œYou know, you sang beautifully,” said judge Harry Connick, Jr after Vaid sang β€œLook at Me” by Carrie Underwood in an earlier round. β€œThat was a perfect performance. I was totally engaged. This was the only time this particular season that I saw somebody that I actually thought would win this thing. That’s a God-given voice.”
