The Coptic Orthodox Church: Planning Board & Conservation Committee Meeting

Event Details

Wayland's New COA Center

All Wayland residents, and especially those living anywhere near Rice Road, are encouraged to attend In Person what may well be the final hearing of Wayland's Planning Board and Conservation Committee regarding the Coptic Church's plans to build a huge diocesan Headquarters at 169 Rice Road over the course of 10-15 years. Rice Road is Wayland's longest historic, scenic road, located in the Hamlen/Mainstone Farm conservation area where walkers and bikers navigate a narrow and dangerous curve.  The Church's demolition and construction plans will materially impact all neighbors and rural roads nearby, as well as the abundance of wildlife.  Noise, lighting, water/septic run-off, the removal of more than 700 trees, and traffic from construction vehicles, as well as nearly 600 future congregants who will use the facilities 7 days a week, are under consideration, as well as the Church's claims of immunity due to the Dover Amendment.  The joint meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm in the new COA facility opposite the entrance to Russell Nursery on Route 20.  If you cannot attend in person, you can find a Zoom link on the Town's website.  The Church expects to receive a final decision by the end of this year.
