WESTON, MA β€” A black lab named Jasmine was rescued by firefighters after falling through thin ice on a frozen pond in Weston Thursday afternoon.

Police say the dog and her owner were out walking at Cat Rock Park when Jasmine ran out onto an ice-covered pond.

Firefighters applauded Jasmine's owner for not trying to run in and rescue the dog herself and for instead calling 911. "You should NEVER try to rescue on your own because you could easily become another victim yourself," the Weston Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

"Hypothermia can set in within minutes for humans and that's why we always tell pet owners, 'Do not go in after your dog. Just call 911 and we'll come effect the rescue,'" said Lt. Dean Munson of the Weston Fire Department.

Both the firefighter and Jasmine returned back with no injuries.
