The Massachusetts House of Representatives last night passed House Bill 4179, An Act Financing Improvements to the Commonwealth’s Transportation System, which authorizes $1.56 billion for transportation projects across the Commonwealth.

As passed, the bill includes an amendment filed by Rep. Alice Hanlon Peisch that authorizes $2.1 million to reconfigure and improve the Wellesley Street/Route 30 (South Ave.) intersection in Weston.

This project is currently at the 25 percent design phase with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and will continue to move forward now that funding has been authorized. This intersection is a highly trafficked route for commuters in Weston as well as the surrounding communities. It is also the primary means of accessing Weston Middle and High Schools for the majority of Weston students.

“This project will not only improve the flow of traffic for the many commuters in the region who use this route, but the updates will make the intersection safer for Weston’s students, bicyclists and pedestrians,” Rep. Peisch said.

In addition to authorizing funding for local road and bridge projects, the overall  legislation provides $200 million in chapter 90 funding to cities and towns, financial assistance for interstate construction projects in Fiscal Years 2012-13, support for regional transit authorities including the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority, and funding for other general operating costs of the transportation department. The bond bill will now head to the Senate for consideration, and then to Governor Patrick for final approval.
