5 Things June 28: Music Marathon Honoring First Responders


  1. On Saturday, there will be a Music Marathon Benefit for One Fund Boston at the Irish Social Club from 2 p.m. until midnight. First responders will be honored and others who helped during the aftermath of the Marathon bombing. Children’s activities, organized by the West Roxbury Y, will be available from 2-6 p.m. Admission is $20 and children are free. Music from the Fenian Sons, Pauline Wells, Erin Og, Silver Spears, Tommy Byrnes, Revel’s Glen, Colm O’Brien, Tradition, Auld Locals, all who have donated their time for the Music Marathon. There will be live music, dancing. DJ, Irish Step Dancing offered by 6 different schools of Irish dance, raffles, including 3 hours of personal training, pool party and Family membership at the YMCA, gift baskets, and a live bachelorette/bachelor auction with largely first responders, which should be fun. Donations can be made to “ONE FUND BOSTON” and brought to the Irish Social Club the day of the event.  
  2. St. Theresa's School graduated its first sixth-grade class with it being the first class to graduate at the sixth grade and not the eighth grade. All of the students have been accepted into Boston's three exam schools or nearby Catholic high schools for the fall. 
  3. Parkway Pop Warner is hosting a Youth Football and Cheer Activity Week from July 8-12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Billings Field. $50 per participant. Non-contact for ages 7 to 15. Football participants will be learning skills, doing drills, and playing games; Cheerleading participants will be learning cheer drill and skills, and routines. Calisthenics, individual and team skills including offense, defense and special teams. Sign-up through the Parkway Pop Warner website or call 617-763-9650.
  4. June 30 is the deadline for applying for West Roxbury-Roslindale Rotary scholarship. Applications can be picked up at Brookline Bank, West Roxbury YMCA, LaRosa Real Estate, Parkway Printing, The Co-Operative Bank, People’s Federal Bank and Blue Hills Bank as well as from any Rotarian.  
  5. There is a hazardous waste drop off day at the DPW Yard, 315 Gardner St., West Roxbury by Millennium Park on Saturday. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
