Potentially Fatal Cat Disease Detected in Boston Neighborhood

Here's what you should know, and how to protect your pet.

BOSTON, MA — Pet owners should be aware that a disease known as Feline Distemper has been detected in some cats in the Mattapan neighborhood, according to the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

The often fatal disease, also known as Panleukopenia, can be prevented with a vaccine. It cannot be transmitted to dogs. Cats can spread the disease between one another through bodily fluids, tears, saliva, and feces, according to the ARL.

Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite and fever. The disease is highly infectious, particularly in young cats and kittens. Adult cats will often have some protection from previous vaccines or earlier exposure to the virus, according to the ARL.
