Federal Judge Approves Construction of Gas Pipeline in West Roxbury

A federal judge plans to issue an order allowing the excavation of Washington, Grove and Centre Streets in West Roxbury.

Construction on a natural gas pipeline in Boston’s West Roxbury neighborhood could begin within weeks after a federal judge ruled in favor of Algonquin Gas Transmission’s proposed project on Thursday, the Boston Herald reports.

Judge William Young plans to issue an order allowing Algonquin to begin construction under Washington, Grove and Centre Streets in West Roxbury.

“Algonquin has established given the present FERC certificate, it has a right to an immediate taking of an easement,” said Young.

Algonquin had taken the City of Boston to court when it was refused the property needed to begin construction. Boston felt Algonquin had not proved the easements were necessary to build a pipeline.

In defeat, Boston plans to explore appeal options. Algonquin hopes to being construction by September 21.

Mayor Mary Walsh previously pledged, “We will continue to pursue all avenues to protect the health and safety of the residents of West Roxbury by working together with the community and with our city, state and federal partners to find the best long-term solution in the interest of our residents.”
