Resistance Continues Against Proposal to Fill in West Roxbury Quarry

Officials, including Boston Mayor Martin Walsh, addressed the proposal with residents Wednesday night.

Already having sparked an ongoing debate in the last several months, a push by representatives of West Roxbury Crushed Stone to fill its quarry with construction soil received continued opposition from local residents at a meeting on Wednesday night, according to The Boston Globe.

More than 200 residents attended a meeting at the Elks Lodge in West Roxbury Wednesday, the Globe reported, at which officials stated they would require the quarry owner to receive approval from residents to dump soil into the quarry. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Congressman Stephen Lynch were among those in attendance to speak on the matter.

West Roxbury Crushed Stone has been looking to bring in outside materials to fill the 350-foot deep quarry on its property. Officials and community member have expressed concerns regarding the implications the effort may have on traffic in the area, as well as safety and on the community overall. Plant representatives have maintained that any materials used would include below RCS-1 level soils, or the acceptable threshold of soils by the state.
