West Roxbury Branch Library Gallery Promotes Enrichment, Local Artists

Library's art gallery is home to a monthly rotation of work from area artists.

In the area neatly tucked to the left of the checkout counter at the West Roxbury Branch Library is an understated, but important look at the artistic community in the area.

The space, which has always been reserved as a gallery, is home to a monthly rotation of various artists from West Roxbury and surrounding communities. Both the artists and the library community feel the benefits of the gallery.

"It's a nice venue for local artists to display their work," said Tim DiPace, the adult services librarian.

Kerry Ann Hawkins, a Dedham native and photographer, had her Photos From the Neighborhood photography exhibit on display for the month of August.

Hawkins sees an art gallery as a perfect fit into the cultural enhancements a library gives the community. "I think (the gallery) just adds to the enrichment," Hawkins said.

The Boston Handmade member is often inspired by what she sees walking around various neighborhoods. Hawkins likes to stroll through different areas, including neighborhoods in Boston, and see what strikes her. Walks through West Roxbury have even yielded a photo in the exhibit.

"West Roxbury has its own fun store windows," said Hawkins.

For September, Magical Moments: Cutler Park at Dawn by Lance Ozier, will replace Hawkins' display.

Each month, the gallery displays different kinds of art, showcasing the area's diverse artists. "All of the work is as different as each artist," said DiPace.

The library also holds a special reception for each artist. DiPace said the events are traditionally well attended. Ozier's reception will be held at the library on Sept. 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Artists interested in exhibiting in the library can contact director Sheila Scott at 617-325-3147. DiPace said potential artists meet with Scott and go over their work so she can write a synopsis of the display.
