Debate on whether the West Roxbury Crushed Stone plant on Grove Street should move forward with a plan to fill its 350-foot deep quarry continued this week, as community members and officials, including Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Congressman Stephen Lynch, gathered Wednesday to discuss the move.
In essence, the plant has been looking to bring in outside materials to fill the quarry on its property. Officials and community member have expressed concerns regarding the implications the effort may have on traffic in the area, as well as safety and on the community overall. Plant representatives have maintained that any materials used would include below RCS-1 level soils, or the acceptable threshold of soils by the state.

On Friday, Laura Lorusso Peterson, a representative of the plant and of SM Lorusso and Sons, Inc., which owns the quarry, weighed in with feedback
“We heard the concerns raised at the recent meeting, and we look forward to collaborating with the mayor and the community to put a process in place that works for everyone,” Peterson said in a statement Friday. “It has always been our intent with this project to reclaim the quarry in a way that is safe, creates a parcel of land that can be used by the community, and that will allow us to phase out blasting for good.”
