Westwood Library Joins Literacy Initiative

The library is joining a nationwide initiative to have children read 1,000 books before Kindergarten.

The Westwood Library is taking part in a special initiative to help children improve their literacy.

The library joined 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a nationwide initiative to promote literacy among infants and toddlers, with a goal of reaching 1,000 books before the child enters kindergarten.

The library is offering a free Smartphone app and physical means of tracking the books read. Prizes are offered for every 100 books read, and the library has a list available as a guide for those unsure of what to read.

Many other communities in the state have adopted the program, including Dedham, Sharon, Medfield, and Waltham. The 1,000 Books Foundation is a non-profit in Nevada non-profit with the goals of promoting reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers and encouraging parent and child bonding through reading.
