Mommalicious Cakes and Treats Provides Personal Service Online
A Weymouth mother cares for her kids by day and bakes custom cakes by night.
A two-foot cake featuring Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer or fondant-sculpted characters from movies, tv and even video games are just some of the creations made by the Weymouth-based online bakery, Mommalicious Cakes and Treats.
Sandra Carroll is a self-taught baker and artist, who has been creating custom cakes at her Weymouth homes since 2010.
"I had been baking for years with my mom in New Hampshire," said Carroll.
Mommalicious Cakes and Treats started out with Carroll and a friend, but is now a family affair, with the Carroll's son, husband and young daughters chipping in. The business started as a way for the stay-at-home moms to work and care of the kids.
"We wanted to spend time with our kids and have an income," Carroll said.
The business offers cupcakes, cookies and other sweet treats, but Carroll said she's found a niche with her custom cakes. "Which is great," Carroll said. "That's what I love doing."
For her more intricate cakes, Carroll takes an idea from a customer, develops a plan and a backup plan and goes to work.
"I'm not afraid to try something," she said.
While the online business might seem more about emails than a personal connection, Carroll said that's not the case. Working with clients to get the perfect custom cake often means a lot of collaboration.
The baker also hand delivers her creations. Carroll typically delivers cakes up to 20 miles from Weymouth, but has gone as far as New Hampshire and Cape Cod.
The online bakery also allows Carroll to focus on customer service and the more creative projects rather than minding a brick and mortar store and keeping a pastry case stocked.
"It's something different and interesting every time," said Carroll.
