Weymouth, MA – A major transformation is on the horizon for North Weymouth’s coastline, as Mayor Robert Hedlund announced the launch of the $7.3 million Wessagusset Walk project. This ambitious initiative aims to enhance pedestrian access, stabilize the coastal embankment, and rejuvenate Wessagusset Beach into a vibrant community asset.

“This project has been many years in the making, and I’m excited that we are moving forward on construction,” said Mayor Hedlund. “Under my administration, North Weymouth has seen historic investment into its community.”

The project includes stabilizing 1,000 linear feet of the existing revetment by reinforcing the embankment to prevent erosion and potential failures. Above the fortified structure, a scenic walkway will be built, offering pedestrians a picturesque route along the coast.

Beach restoration efforts are also a key component of the plan, with 1,000 feet of Wessagusset Beach set to undergo debris removal and reshaping to restore its natural profile. Invasive plant species will be replaced with native vegetation, enriching the habitat and showcasing the area’s natural beauty. Additionally, the project will restore the public stairway adjacent to “the shelf,” reconnecting the shoreline with the surrounding community and improving access for residents and visitors alike.

Project Timeline
Construction is scheduled to begin the week of January 6, 2025, with substantial completion anticipated by Memorial Day 2025, weather permitting. To minimize disruption during the summer, any additional work will resume after Labor Day.

The construction milestones are as follows:

  • Early Winter 2025: Mobilization, demolition, vegetation clearing, revetment dismantling, foundation preparation, and invasive species management.
  • Winter/Spring 2025: Reconstruction of the revetment, installation of a beach access ramp, and drainage improvements.
  • Summer Shutdown 2025: Construction pause from May 26 to September 1 to accommodate peak beach season.
  • Fall 2025: Completion of revetment work, boardwalk installation, and final vegetation management.

A Project with Impact
The Wessagusset Walk project is a significant investment in the community and environment, addressing critical needs for North Weymouth:

  1. Embankment Stabilization: Reinforcing the revetment will protect the coastline from erosion and embankment failures, ensuring long-term stability.
  2. Improved Public Access: A new walkway and restored stairway will create safe, scenic, and enhanced access to the coastline, encouraging outdoor recreation and community connections.
  3. Environmental Revitalization: The removal of invasive plants and addition of native vegetation will support local wildlife and improve the ecological health of the area.
  4. Community Enhancement: Wessagusset Beach will be transformed into a cleaner, more inviting destination for residents and visitors alike.

Mayor Hedlund emphasized the importance of the project in preserving North Weymouth’s coastline as a vital resource for generations to come.
