Emergency Medicine Doctor

Why do you believe the nominee should be recognized or honored?
Dr. Sonia Ursino Beauvais current resident of Winchester, grew up in Somerville and Medford along with loving family and life long friends.

Her journey toward medicine began on the day she voiced to her Mother that she may want to be a doctor, this was in the fifth grade, the year that Sonia saved her class from a school bus that they were on that was left unattended by the driver who accidentally forgot to put on the brake. As the bus started rolling down Fulton Street headed for the Fellsway in Medford, Dr. Sonia got up, steered the bus to the left and put on the brakes saving her class. That year she was chosen to put the wreath on the unknown soldier in Washington, D.C. It was also that year that her mother gave her a biology book for her birthday and from then on there was no stopping this little "life saver.” She went on to graduate cum laude at Boston College in biology and finally UMASS medical school in 2002. She completed her residency at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York City to the underserved in Spanish Harlem. After 10 years of working as an Emergency Medicine doctor at Melrose-Wakefield, Sonia recently became the Chief of Urgent Care for Atrius Health in Boston, now known as the Respiratory Illness Center/COVID-19 Center.

What’s one thing you want everyone to know about your hero?:
Sonia is a committed mom of two currently working on the front lines as we battle this invisible enemy. Never did she put herself first, always thinking of others, always seeing the good in people. Here she is today, no questions asked, except, “I am a Dr. and I want to help you.”
