International Handmade Crafts Sold in Downtown Winchester

The Wadjet Gallery on Mount Vernon Street might be one of the most vibrant and intriguing shops in Winchester. For about a year and a half, Wadjet Gallery has sold artifacts and decorations from all over the world. “We collect hand-made work from all over the world,” President Marlin Salama said. “You will work from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt and Italy.”

Salama said that a certain knowledge and appreciation for the degree of work that goes into hand-made crafts. She found that in a town like Winchester, where residents are highly educated, there is a great appreciation for handcrafted goods.

“My husband started working in the business 15 years ago,” Salama said. “We used to live in Egypt and we owned a shop over there that sold similar goods to tourists.”

Salama said that where the goods come from does not have as big an influence on the customer, but the price and the details are the two selling points. She said that her clientele usually consists of people over 50, but she was surprised when she saw how much young children loved her products. “I think they study in school about other cultures, so when they find something from Indonesia or Egypt and they have studied that culture, they get excited.”
