Man Arrested in Connection with Vehicle Break-Ins

A Somerville man was arrested by Winchester Police in connection with breaking and entering into motor vehicles.

Winchester Police announced a man was arrested today in connection with breaking and entering into multiple vehicles in Winchester.

Gary B. Mercer, 20, of Somerville, is facing a handful of charges in connection with several vehicle break-ins early this morning, police said.

Around 4:30 a.m. Winchester Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle break-in on Bacon Street. Police said a man had Mercer cornered in a driveway on Harrington Road.

The man reportedly said he exited his home this morning and observed Mercer and another person going through vehicles in his driveway. He then pursued Mercer and the other unidentified man on foot. According to Winchester Police, Mercer fled down Harrington Road, a dead end street, and the other man fled down Bacon Street.

Mercer faces several charges, including larceny of property over $250, breaking and entering in the night time with the intent to commit a felony and receiving stolen property, police said.

Authorities recovered a backpack from the suspect with items allegedly stolen from the vehicles. After searching the area, police also discovered several other vehicles in the area had been broken into.

“We are pursuing all leads connected to this case,” Chief Kenneth C. Albertelli said. “Any residents in the area of these break-ins with information are encouraged to call police.”

The investigation is ongoing. Police urge anyone with information regarding the second suspect to contact the Winchester Police Department at 781-729-1214.
