Winchester's Wolfgang All-Stars Shine
After two wins from both the Wolfgang U11 and U13 All-Star teams, the boys will travel to Babson for another tournament this weekend.
Representatives from Winchester's Wolfgang Lacrosse participated in the first annual New England Select Lacrosse League All-Star games at Harvard University on Saturday.
At the U11 level, the undefeated Town Select champion Wolfgang squad sent five boys to the All-Star game. Each of them played a key role for their team in a 7-1 win over another NESLL All-Star team at Cumnock Field. The first half of the game was dominated by defense, and Defender Collin Bergstrom led the charge. Bergstrom played the entire game and prevented the opposition from getting more than just a few scoring opportunities. At the half, the score was 2-1, the lead provided by a coast to coast jaunt and scoring strike by Midfielder Michael Bongiorno, which came shortly after Charlie Ward found a teammate and put the ball on his stick for the game's first goal.
In the second half Tommy Welch took over net-keeping duties and pitched a shutout, while Andrew Murray and Bergstrom protected their Wolfgang teammate by controlling and clearing the ball regularly. Bongiorno (2 goals, 1 assist) found the net again to make the lead 3-1, and then Ward (2 goals, 2 assists) scored twice with perfectly placed shots late in the game to put it away, as the Wolfgang boys figured in on all 7 goals for the winners.

Next door at Harvard's Jordan Stadium, the U13 All-Stars were also paced by Wolfgang players. Goalie Charlie Nowell frustrated the opponents with a variety of spectacular saves, while Hayden Bean played lock down defense all afternoon. On the offensive side of the field, David Taylor showed off his great skill and speed, finding a teammate on a perfect long pass for a score. Attacker Michael Drew scored an impressive goal for the winners. In addition, Wolfgang Attackman Jake Mabardy joined the U13 Elite All-Star team as a NESLL Metro West representative and played a great game at both Attack and Midfield for the win.
