Heavy Rains and Possible Flooding to Continue Through Today

Another batch of heavy rain is expected Tuesday.

It appears we are in for some more rain today and tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch yesterday that is set to last through Tuesday evening for Woburn, as well as most of eastern Massachusetts and parts of Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

It was the second flood watch issued in the past four days – a similar alert was issued on Friday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea moved through. The Woburn area saw more than three inches of rain from that storm.

There may be a lull early Tuesday “but additional showers and embedded thunderstorms are expected to develop again Tuesday afternoon and persist into the evening.”

By Tuesday evening, another 2.5 inches of rain could fall.

The flood watch means that flooding is possible “especially since the ground is quite saturated.” In particular, there is concern about “urban areas” with poor drainage and small rivers and streams “since they are running quite high from the recent heavy rainfall.”

The weather service recommends that anyone who is concerned about the possibility of flooding to monitor later weather forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings.

“Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop,” the weather service said.
