WOBURN, MA — Woburn City Council recently gave its okay to a proposed $317 million new Northeast Metro Tech school project.

With a $140 million state grant cutting the amount needed, Woburn would be responsible for $15.7 million in borrowing, based on its share of the school's enrollment.

That would mean $900,000 per year in debt service over 30 years.

The council gave its approval unanimously Oct. 28, as first reported by the Daily Times Chronicle.

But that doesn't mean the project will go ahead. Two other communities, Saugus and Chelsea, recently rejected the proposal, at a town meeting and city council respectively.

The project will likely need to win a popular vote across the 12 member municipalities to go forward, Mayor Scott Galvin told the council.

The meeting video is available here from Woburn Public Media Center, with the beginning missing due to technical difficulties.
