π° News we're reading
β’ Steamship considers Falmouth standby locations - The Martha's Vineyard Times (mvtimes.com) β Ongoing construction at the Woods Hole ferry terminal is prompting Steamship Authority officials to consider new vehicle staging areas in Falmouth to ease congestion and improve safety around the terminal. Options on Palmer Avenue and Gifford Street could handle hundreds of cars and freight trucks, but would add significant staffing costs, so officials are still weighing alternatives and expect a new reservation system next fall to help.

β’ Steamship Honors Captain, Crew for Efforts During Rescue at Sea (vineyardgazette.com) β A Steamship Authority captain and crew were formally honored after rescuing a passenger who went overboard in rough seas off Woods Hole in October. Working with the U.S. Coast Guard Woods Hole, the Island Home crew quickly executed man-overboard procedures, helping ensure the person was safely airlifted for treatment and survived with nonβlife-threatening exposure injuries.

β’ Ban on Maine shrimp fishing extended to 2028 (mainebiz.biz) β Research from Woods Holeβs Northeast Fisheries Science Center is helping explain why Maineβs northern shrimp fishery will stay closed until at least 2028. Scientists there linked the collapse to warming Gulf of Maine waters and increased predators like squid, spiny dogfish, and redfish, meaning any recovery β and future fishing opportunities for Massachusetts boats β will likely take years.
