Electric School Buses Coming To Worcester With EPA Grant

WORCESTER, MA — Federal officials visited Worcester on Monday to celebrate a $5.8 million Environmental Protection Agency grant that will allow the school district to buy 15 electric school buses to complement the all-gasoline fleet.

Monday's celebration included an inaugural electric bus ride from Lincoln Street Elementary to Worcester Technical High School. Officials including Democratic U.S. Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern and EPA New England Administrator David Cash attended.

The Worcester Public Schools grant was one of four given out in Massachusetts. Boston, Fall River and New Bedford will share in $30 million from the EPA for electric buses.

After years of using private school bus companies, Worcester purchased its own fleet of buses using COVID-19 stimulus funds. The district's new fleet went into service at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.
