Festival Of Lights To Return To Worcester Common

The event will feature food vendors, a visit from Santa and live entertainment, among other things.

WORCESTER, MA — The city's annual Festival of Lights celebration is set to happen on the Worcester Common next month.

The free event on Dec. 5 will feature 15 food vendors, a beer garden, a visit from Santa, face painting, an interactive roving circus and fire acts, and ice skating. Plus, NBC's The Voice runner-up Ricky Duran and rock group the Blue Light Bandits will headline the festival.

There will be other community performances from the Burncoat High School Quadrivium Chorus, Jo Ann Warren Studio, Many Voices: Mechanics Hall Youth Singers, Midland Street Elementary Youth Choir, and North High School.

Inside the library, there will also be a hot cocoa station, family crafts, giveaways, a family picture-taking area, and a pop-up holiday sale.

The event, which runs from 4:30 to 9 p.m., is the first of the city's winter lighting installations, which run through March 1. The tree lighting will kick off at 6 p.m.

The city said road closures will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Franklin Street and at 2 p.m. on Front Street.

This year’s lighting installations are supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ (NEFA) Making It Public Grant, the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District, and the City of Worcester.

The city was one of 10 municipalities in the state to participate in public art training and grant initiative by NEFA in partnership with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council’s Arts and Culture Department. You can learn more about the art activations and light installations here.
