How Do Worcester County Commute Times Compare?

New U.S. Census survey looks at the travel time to work for drivers in Worcester County.

WORCESTER, MA — Commuters in Worcester County get to work, on average, about a minute faster than the rest of the state, according to new data released in a U.S. Census survey for 2015.

On average, Worcester County commuters take about 28.8 minutes to get to work, about a minute less than Massachusetts as a whole, and more than three minutes less than than the Boston area. However, that local commute time has also grown by a full minute since 2014.

The breakdown of how people are getting to work in Worcester County looks something like this for 2015:

  • Car, truck, van (driving alone): 80.9%
  • Car, truck, or van (carpooling): 8.3%
  • Public transportation (taxicabs excluded): 2%
  • Walking: 2.6%
  • Other means: 1.7%
  • Worked at home: 4.5%

And like this, in 2014:

  • Car, truck, van (driving alone): 81%
  • Car, truck, or van (carpooling): 9.4%
  • Public transportation (taxicabs excluded): 1.4%
  • Walking: 2.7%
  • Other means: 1.1%
  • Worked at home: 4.4%

The U.S. Census performs the American Community Survey each year, asking questions about housing, employment and other demographic information. The findings are released for states and major metro areas each September, and complete data on every community is released toward the end of the year.
