I-190 Lanes Closing In Worcester As Rail Bridge Work Continues

Lanes on both sides of I-190 will be squeezed over several days this week and next week, according to MassDOT.

WORCESTER, MA — Construction work will squeeze both sides of I-190 over the next two weeks as MassDOT continues the rehabilitation of a bridge that crosses rail tracks just east of Indian Lake.

The closures will take place nightly between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following day on Wednesday and Thursday this week, and then again on June 17 and 18. The lanes closures will happen intermittently on both the north and southbound sides of the highway during those times as construction crews re-stripe the highway.

  • When the I-190 (exit 1) southbound on-ramp at Route 12 southbound/West Boylston Street will be closed, traffic will be detoured to Route 12 northbound, onto I-190 northbound to exit 2, to Ararat Street, onto South Frontage Road, and back to I-190 southbound. 
  • When the I-190 (exit 1) northbound off-ramp will be closed, traffic will be detoured to exit 2, to North Frontage Road, onto West Mountain Street, to reach Route 12.  
  • Both ramps will not be closed at the same time.

MassDOT began renovating the bridge above the Providence and Worcester Railroad tracks that cross under the highway between the I-290 split and Gold Star Boulevard in summer 2022.
