Local High School Opens 25-Year-Old Time Capsule

The capsule was buried in 2000.

WORCESTER, MA — A local high school uncovered 25-year-old memories this week.

Former teachers and students from Burncoat High School gathered to open a time capsule from 2000 on Wednesday, according to the school district. The capsule, which was buried in the BHS courtyard, was unearthed last week.

Inside the capsule, the group found class photos, memorabilia and artwork. There were local newspaper clippings, projects and yearbooks that documented school events and achievements.

The search for the capsule began last Friday, when a former teacher, Brenda Hellerberg, brought a yearbook from 2001 to help find it, according to the school district.

“This event brought together former teachers, students, and staff to celebrate the school’s history,” said William Foley, Executive Director of Schools, Burncoat Quadrant, in the Worcester Public Schools.

Foley was a history teacher at BHS at the time the capsule was buried.

“It’s amazing to see memories from 2000 resurface and inspire reflection on how far our school community has come," he said.
