WORCESTER, MA — A local college food pantry is experiencing unprecedented demand, according to the school.
Quinsigamond Community College’s HomePlate Food Pantry & Resource Center said it is serving more students and families than ever before. The pantry serves up to 100 students on busy days.
HomePlate serves over 750 students and nearly 1,700 household members. However, at this time last year, the pantry had 450 students and supported 890 household members.

“We have adjusted our system so that we don’t have to turn anyone away, but the need goes up every week,” said Charlotte Operach, HomePlate's manager. “With everything going on with SNAP benefits and the cost of living so high, there’s a lot of anxiety. But our students are so resilient."
HomePlate provides food and personal hygiene items, and connects students experiencing housing issues to resources.

Three-quarters of the pantry's food supply comes from the Worcester County Food Bank, while the rest comes from donations and grants.
Community support is so important, according to Operach. HomePlate accepts product donations at its main campus and monetary contributions through the QCC Foundation. You can also donate grocery store gift cards, up to $50 for students.
