Worcester Adopts 'Sanctuary' Status, Nguyen Returns To Council: Report

Following a long series of deliberations, the city council voted in favor of labeling Worcester a "sanctuary" for the LGBTQ+ community.

Members of the council were reportedly concerned that federal funding could be cut if such a label was adopted, but the vote was approved 9-2.

WORCESTER, MA - The Worcester council voted 9-2 to designate the city a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community, according to the Telegram & Gazette.

Thu Nguyen, the councilor at-large who announced a hiatus last month and alleged LGBTQ+ discrimination from Mayor Joseph Petty and other colleagues, returned to the council and voted in favor of the petition.

Concerns from councilors over federal funding were apparently met with taunting from the audience.
