WORCESTER, MA — Worcester will mark Arbor Day on Friday with a celebration and tree planting at Mulcahy Field on Grafton Hill.

Friday's celebration will feature the planting of two black gum trees, which are among the 300 new trees the city plans to plant this spring.

Arbor Day will also mark two milestones for the city: the 38th year Worcester has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation, and the 25th year the city has received the Tree City USA Growth Award — a distinction for communities that invest more in urban tree canopies.

Arbor Day will continue on Saturday, when the city and volunteers will break ground on a new Miyawaki forest in the parking lot behind the main library downtown. Saturday's event is the first of three Myawaki plantings planning this spring.

Friday's Arbor Day evening begins at 10 a.m. along Acton Street, and is being held in partnership with the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, the state Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Worcester Urban Forestry Tree Commission, the Green Worcester Advisory Commission and National Grid.
