In recognition of White Cane Day, the Wrentham Lions Club is holding its annual Toll Road Saturday May 4, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Wrentham Center. Funds donated will be used for Lions Charities such as Perkins Schools for the Blind, National Braille Press and the Clara Barton Diabetes Center for Children. Local charities include the Wrentham Food Pantry, Scholarships, and numerous elder services.
White Cane Day is promoted to help provide a better understanding of what a white cane means and how pedestrians and motorists can assist white cane users and guide dog users at street crossings. Massachusetts has a White Cane Law which requires drivers to yield to persons using a white cane or guide dog. The white cane is a symbol of independence allowing a legally blind person to travel independently when using it.
