Obituary: Elizabeth A. (O'Connell) Mitchell

Mrs. Elizabeth A. (O'Connell) Mitchell was a longtime Norfolk resident.

Elizabeth A. (O’Connell) Mitchell, 84, died Friday, June 14, 2013 at Newport Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph L. Mitchell and the daughter of James and Agnes O’Connell.

She was preceded in death by her four siblings, Zita, James, William and Ralph. She is survived by her brother in law Charles Mitchell, and his wife, Peggy of Russellville, AK and her sister in law, Anne O’Connell of Newport, RI.

Born in Newport RI, she was a resident of Norfolk, for 44 years before returning to Aquidneck Island in 2002. She was a proud member of the Rogers High School class of 1946 and the first graduating class of Salve Regina University.

A longtime parishioner of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Norfolk, Ma, she was a current member of St. Lucy’s parish in Middletown, RI.

She is the beloved mother of Beth Wachenfeld and her husband Bill of Pennington, NJ, Joseph L. Mitchell Jr. and his wife Denise, of Norton, MA, Maripat Raiter and her husband Richard of Winthrop, MA and Kevin C. Mitchell and his wife, Cheryl of Fort Myers, FL. “Nonnie” will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Brendon, Jamyn, Crystina, Kaelah, Jana, Joe III, Nicolai, Kevin Jr. and Colin. “Aunt Betty” will also be missed by Mary Beth, Kathy, Jimmy, Mary, Bill, Patrick and Michaela.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Rd., Middletown, RI. Burial will be at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 18,  the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI from 4-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless 780 Albany Street Boston, MA 02118-2318.
