Wrentham Man, 73, Dead After Driving Into Pond: Police

Officials believe Steve Perry was "disoriented" while driving in the Hamilton area when he entered a darkened road that led to a pond.

WRENTHAM, MA — A 73-year-old Wrenthan man who went missing over the weekend was found dead in a Hamilton pond Wednesday, Wrentham police said in a Facebook post.

Police said they were initially able to reach Steve Perry, a retired truck driver, by cell phone after he went out to a restaurant Saturday afternoon and failed to return home.

Perry told officers he got lost after getting on Route 495 and touched base with them several times throughout Saturday night as he traveled from Providence, to somewhere south of Harford, Connecticut, to Revere Beach then Manchester-by-the-Sea, police said.

At some point, Perry's phone lost battery and officers could no longer reach him, according to police.

In an update Wednesday, police shared that they were "sad to report Mr. Perry has been located and is deceased."

Officials believe Perry was driving in the Hamilton area when he entered a darkened road that led to a boat landing and a pond, police said.

"Apparently disoriented, Mr. Perry accidentally drove into the water, submerging his vehicle, resulting in his death," police wrote. " ... We extended our sympathies to his family and friends."
