MI Winter Storm: Some Areas Could Get 20 Inches Of Snow

Heavy snow will batter parts of northern Michigan through the weekend, while the Detroit area will get just a couple inches of snow.

MICHIGAN — A winter storm could dump nearly 2 feet of snow in some areas across Michigan by Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service.

National Weather forecasters expect the Gaylord area to get between 13 and 18 inches of fresh snow by Sunday. Other snowfall totals include 13-21 inches in Mancelona, 5-11 inches in Boyne City and 5-9 inches in Petoskey, according to the weather service.

Farther north into the Upper Peninsula, National Weather forecasters expect Munising to get anywhere from 14-20 inches of snow, 10-20 inches in Grand Marais, 10-20 inches in Paradise and 6-15 inches in Newberry.

The winter storm warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday depending on location.

Heavy lake effect snow showers can dump between 2 and 5 inches of fresh snow in areas along Lake Michigan, including the Grand Rapids region, by Friday night, according to the weather service.

National Weather forecasters expect 1 to 4 inches of snow across areas in the central part of Michigan and across southeastern Michigan by Friday night.

Forecasters warned brief snow squalls across southeastern Michigan can lead to whiteout conditions at times Friday. Areas south of Michigan 59 are more likely to see heavy snow squalls, with the best chances coming along and south of the Interstate 94 corridor, according to the weather service.

Those areas can see between 1 and 4 inches of fresh snow by Friday night, according to the weather service.

Any lingering snow showers across southeastern Michigan will fade away by Saturday morning, according to the weather service.

Along with the snow, high temperatures across southeastern Michigan will fall below freezing with most areas seeing wind gusts reach up to 30 miles per hour, according to the weather service.
