Michigan Officials Warn Of Poisonous Caterpillar

Here's what you need to know about the dangers of you or a child touching the American Dagger caterpillar.

MICHIGAN — A poisonous caterpillar has been found in Michigan and now officials are warning residents not to touch the furry creatures.

The American Dagger caterpillar (Acronicta americana) was spotted during a hike through the trails on Mid Michigan College's campus, according to officials in Clare County.

"These cute caterpillars may seem harmless, but they are indeed poisonous," the Clare Area Chamber of Commerce shared in a Facebook post. "DO NOT PICK THEM UP! Both children and adults can be affected by them. Symptoms include the following: stinging sensation followed by a burning, itching sensation on the skin which can develop into a rash."
