Mom, Baby Killed In West MI Crash: Sheriff

Police said a pickup truck began hydroplaning on a wet road before hitting an embankment.

KENT COUNTY, MI — A mother and her baby were killed in a Sunday morning crash in west Michigan, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened at 10:30 a.m. on 84th Avenue, west of Thornapple River Drive in Caledonia Township, southeast of Grand Rapids, according to the sheriff's office.

Police said a 40-year-old Woodland man was driving a pickup truck on the road while a 36-year-old woman was tending to her 17-month-old baby in the backseat.

The pickup truck then began hydroplaning on the wet road and hit an embankment, according to the sheriff's office.

The mother and baby, who were both unbuckled, were ejected from the pickup truck, according to the sheriff's office.

An off-duty emergency room doctor witnessed the crash and tried to help, but the mother and baby died, according to the sheriff's office.

The father was not injured in the crash, according to the sheriff's office.

"The KCSO extends our deepest condolences to the family and all who are impacted by this tragic accident," the sheriff's office said.
