See Where 2 MI Cities Rank Among Country's Safest In 2025

A report analyzed how safe U.S. cities are on everything from public health issues to disasters and shootings. Two MI cities are ranked.

Two Michigan cities are among the nation's safest, according to a new report.

The report comes from personal finance website WalletHub, which compared more than 180 U.S. cities across 41 key metrics. The data set ranges from traffic fatalities per capita and assaults per capita to the unemployment rate and the percentage of the population that is uninsured.

Grand Rapids ranked No. 82 in the nation for safest cities in the U.S. with a total score of 58.44, according to the WalletHub report.

The Kent County community ranked No. 98 in the nation for home and community safety, 64th in the nation for natural disaster risk and 48th in the nation for financial safety.

Toward the bottom of the list can be found Detroit, which came in at No. 179. Detroit earned a score of 36.38, ranked 177th in home and community safety, 100th for natural disaster risk and 181st for financial safety. Detroit is also tied for No. 1 in law enforcement per capita.

However, Detroit was among the nation's leaders in assaults per capita, as well as owning the highest unemployment rate across the cities the study analyzed.

The top five safest cities in the U.S. are:

  1. Warwick, RI
  2. Overland Park, KS
  3. Burlington, VT
  4. Juneau, AK
  5. Yonkers, NY
